  • GL Garrad Hassan, has released a comprehensive report on Wave and Tidal Energy in the UK. Though the document is focused on the UK market, the document offers a comprehensive analysis of the marine energy industry and hence might be useful for anyone associated with this renewable energy industry. More importantly, this document should be read by countries/regions having rich marine ecosystems, but are unsure about marine energy implementation.

This document offers insights on the following topics: Current state and potential of the marine energy industry, risks associated with marine energy industry, possible ways to mitigate the risks, benefits of developing wave/tidal energy, pathway to commercialization, etc. As mentioned earlier, the report is meant for the UK audience, but offers substantial information to members of this industry located elsewhere, as well.

You can download the document and read it from here.

As far as India is concerned, there is one tidal energy project that has been initiated by the Govt. of Gujarat (in Kutch). But, there are more than 9 other states/union territories having a long sea-coast. Is no one interested in exploiting the free energy offered by the sea? At least one tidal energy company from UK is already present to help in the Indian market. Let's hope to see more action from the other states, which are active promoting renewable energy (solar, wind), but not hydro.

Do remember: Arunachal Pradesh Govt. is already doing a great job in promoting micro hydro generators along rivers/streams. But, rivers are not the only source of moving water that can be used to generate energy. The vast sea (with its waves and the tides) is also a powerful source of energy, waiting to be harnessed.
